Regina Catholic Students LOVE to read!

For only the second time in the history of the Accelerated Reader program in our system, we have students who have earned 1,000 points!  And they did this while maintaining an overall reading comprehension average of over 90%!

1,000 Point Club
• Shelby Dozorec (Grade 7) – St. Catherine Community School
• Dominique Middleton (Grade 8) – Sacred Heart Community School
• Elisabeth Sahlmueller (Grade 8) – St. Francis School

For those you not familiar with AR, this is an amazing accomplishment.  For every book that a student reads and quizzes on, the student has the possibility to earn points.  Point values are based on the length of the book and the text difficulty.  After a student takes a Reading Practice Quiz, she earns points based on the book’s point value and how well she did on the quiz.  In this way, points are a measure of reading practice—a summary of quantity, quality, and difficulty.  Reading Practice Quizzes have 5, 10, or 20 questions, depending on the length of the book.  The cut off for earning a percentage of the points on a 5 or 10 question quiz is 60% correct.  The cut off for a 20 question quiz is 70%.

Regina Catholic Schools Celebrates 40 years of French Immersion Programming!

2009-2010 will see a celebration of 40 years of French Immersion programming being available in the Regina Catholic School Division.
French Immersion is a highly successful choice program in Saskatchewan and in Canada. It started in St. Lambert, Quebec in the early 1960s and quickly made its way throughout the country. In Saskatchewan, the program started in Gravelbourg, Saskatoon and Regina in the late 60s.

St. Pius X Elementary was the first school in the Division to officially house the program and it opened its doors in September 1969 to 25 Grade 1 students. After 40 years, there are now six French Immersion schools in the Regina Catholic School Division: four elementary schools (St. Andrew, St. Angela, St. Pius X and St. Mary) and two high schools (Archbishop M.C. O’Neill and Dr. Martin LeBoldus). There are more than 1,600 students in the program today the enrolment is steadily increasing.

The 40th anniversary will be highlighted during the French Second Language Education Week (February 1-5, 2010) and will feature a number of cultural and fun activities for all students to enjoy.

A Eucharistic celebration will take place on February 2nd at 10:00am and 1:30pm at Holy Child Church, 2636 7th Ave. E. for all French Immersion students and their families and friends now in French Immersion and parents who are considering French Immersion for their children.

Regina Catholic Schools is proud to offer official language learning!

Congratulations to the staff, students, and parents of St. Pius X School!
The school recently collected several barrels of food for the Regina Food Bank.
Each week in October the students were asked to bring in something different. The first week they brought in baby food and formula and they were able to fill up one huge barrel. The second week students collected canned meat, fish, and beans. The third week students collected pasta, rice, or Kraft dinner and the fourth and final week students were asked to bring in canned soup as well as fruit and vegetables.

St. Pius X school is just one of many schools within the Regina Catholic School Division that participated in the October food drive. Congratulations to all that participated!

Meet Us Halfway Fundraiser Raises $19,425.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation!

On September 25th 2009, more than 1300 students and staff from Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School & Miller Comprehensive High School participated in a 10 kilometer walk/run in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.

Participants used pledge forms to collect donations for the Terry Fox Foundation.

The fundraiser saw participants from Miller and LeBoldus run or walk on a route that took them from their respective schools to the Conexus Art Centre and back, twice. The participants crossed paths with the students and staff from the other high school when they reached the water station located near the Conexus Art Centre.
