School Demographics
Archbishop M.C. O’Neill High School is located in the city of Regina, Saskatchewan (134 Argyle Street, S4R 4C3) in the north end of the city. It is a publicly funded Catholic High School that is one of four secondary schools in the Regina Catholic School Division. The school opened its doors in 1966 and it is currently is a dual track school (English Stream and French Immersion Stream) with approximately 680 registered students (grades 9, 10, 11, and 12) and 55 staff members. The school takes its name from Archbishop M.C. O’Neill who was a positive force in bringing about Catholic secondary education in the Archdiocese of Regina.
O’Neill draws students from ten associate schools that are located in lower socio/ economic core areas of Regina and also more affluent suburban areas of the city. Three of the ten associate schools within our school boundaries are designated by the provincial government as community schools. O’Neill received its community school designation in 2001, and as such we receive funding from Saskatchewan Learning to design and implement programs that benefit all students, staff, and members of the community. We have a full-time community school coordinator who works with school administration, staff, parents, parish and community members as a team member in planning, implementing, and coordinating all aspects of the school program including: encouraging parent and community involvement, supporting the learning program, facilitating integrated school-linked services, carrying out community development and promoting the community school program.
Programming
We are a full service, dual-track (French and English) semestered high school with mainstream and modified programming. The school operates on a 197 day school year, usually beginning around August 27 and ending June 28 (with holidays for Christmas and Easter). Our school day is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
In addition to our mainstream classes we also offer:
Advanced Classes: Advanced Placement classes offer students an opportunity to receive academic enrichment and the opportunity to pursue college level studies while still in secondary school. Successful completion of Advanced Placement classes will result in students receiving Advanced Placement designation on Saskatchewan Learning transcripts and possible university credit (dependent on scores obtained on AP International Exams written in May each year).
- Advanced Placement Courses in: Studio Art, English Literature & Composition, Computer Science, Calculus, and Psychology.
- We prepare students to challenge AP Exams in: French and Spanish.
Modified Classes: These classes are for students who meet the criteria for the modified program in a regular stream high school. The students will take some classes with a 91, 11, 21, or 31 designation as well as regular stream classes over their four years at O’Neill.
French Immersion Programming: The key goal of French Immersion is a high level of fluency in French for students. Upon graduation from secondary school, our French Immersion students will possess the same academic qualifications as their counterparts who have received their instruction only in English. The program strives to expose students to the French language and culture so that they may learn to appreciate it and value others.
In all programming, our students have excelled. O’Neill students were awarded $300,000.00 of scholarship money in 2008; a tribute to their hard work and the quality education that occurs in our building.
A wide range of athletic activities are offered to all students of Archbishop M.C. O’Neill High School. Participation is encouraged and fostered by teachers who coach and administer our programs.
Activities which are available at O’Neill include:
- Badminton
- Baseball
- Basketball (Sr. & Jr. Boys & Girls)
- Cross Country
- Curling
- Football
- Hockey
- Soccer (Boys & Girls)
- Softball
- Track & Field
- Volleyball (Sr. & Jr. Boys & Girls)
- Wrestling (Boys & Girls)
All programs culminate with our Extra-Curricular Awards Night held annually in the spring.
Our school is well known not only for our sport teams but also for outstanding fine arts programs. Our choral program consists of approximately 220 students each year and vocal jazz groups of 15 to 20 students at each grade level. The choral students perform at the Conexus Arts Centre twice a year and travel to Alberta annually where they perform at five or six schools over a three day period. We produce one major drama production yearly, we enter the Saskatchewan Regional One-Act Play Festival annually, and we have an active improvisation team.
Our overall school enrolment has been fairly consistent over the past three years and our overall student attendance has improved with the implementation of an attendance practice in 2005-2006. With improved attendance and best practice approaches in the writing of national (CAT 3) and provincial (AFL Math 20) assessments, we believe our student outcomes will continue to improve.
