October 11th

In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

We spend much of our day talking and listening.  Which is easy when the person you're talking to has a face and smiles!  Jesus speaks to us too but he wears a different kind of face. Every day he speaks though the goodness in the people and the world around us.  He speaks in music, art, loving and kind deeds.  He even speaks to us when a person who cares for us helps us learn to act more lovingly or corrects our mistakes as we learn about our world, ourselves and God.

Jesus teaches us how to pray in this gospel story from both Luke (11:1-4) and Matthew (6:9-13).  Prayer is having a conversation with God. We speak and then we listen for Jesus response in the word around us:

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.' He said to them, 'When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name.
   Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
   And forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial.'

Matthew's version of the Lord's prayer goes like this:

'Pray then in this way:
Our Father in heaven,
   hallowed be your name.
   Your kingdom come.
   Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
   And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us to the time of trial,
but rescue us from the evil one.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ!

Each of us finds our own way to speak to our Creator God – may we find our spiritual voice and may our actions reflect the love of God within us.

In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
