Dear Parents and Guardians,
This fall we began an exciting initiative designed to celebrate positive school behaviour. School-Wide Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) is a framework that engages the staff with all students in reinforcing positive behaviours.
An Expectation Matrix has been developed by staff to promote positive behavioural expectations in different areas of the school. Students are encouraged to demonstrate respect, responsibility, and best effort throughout the day.
All staff will acknowledge positive behaviours by providing students with verbal praise and feedback. In addition, as the year goes on, positive behaviours may be identified by giving students PBIS tickets. Tickets will be collected and draws will be made at weekly and monthly assemblies.
At the beginning of the year, the behavior matrix was introduced to the students. Over the course of the year, it will be practiced and referred to on a regular basis. Each classroom has an English and a French version posted for student and staff reference. As well, there is a large version posted in the hallway by the gym and the virtues, which the expectations are based upon, are posted by the main office. Attached is a copy for you.
To assist in gathering information about the needs of our student body, we will be collecting data around current student behaviours. Please note as we move forward, that teacher data about individual students and their classroom profiles will be shared only with school administration. Administration will compile the general data (school trends and progress over the year) to share with staff and with parents through the year.
Our hope is that we can promote school expectations in a positive and proactive way and encourage student engagement by building staff-student relationships.
More information about SWPBIS will be shared on our web site in the near future. If you are interested in learning more, or if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
