In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
From Mark's gospel (7:14-23 - adapted) we hear Jesus comment about what shows where our hearts are at:
'Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.'
When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. He said to them, 'Then do you also fail to understand? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters, not the heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer?' (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, 'It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.'
The Gospel of the Lord…Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Maybe we need to take a moment and look honestly at ourselves to discover who we have become and what we need to work on to become the loving and wise children of God – or at least a better person. It is what come out of us in our words and actions that shows others who we really are in our hearts. With God's help we can find the goodness sometimes buried deep within us. So, what comes out of your mouth or actions?
Let's pray the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
We root our day in the love of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
