Elementary:

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Amen

Jesus asks a dude named Matthew to be a disciple.

Matthew was as a tax collector was very unpopular with the people of Galilee at that time as it meant he was working for the enemy, the Romans. Nevertheless, Jesus called him to follow him.   Jesus said to Matthew, "Follow Me."  And Matthew got up and followed him. Would you follow Jesus if he called you?

Well, no matter who we are and what people think of us, we are all called to follow Jesus. Sometimes we don't think that we are good enough to be a friend of Jesus. Jesus thinks otherwise. God's gift to us is that we are all good enough to be part of the mission of Jesus spreading goodness and light into our world.  And this is very much needed today.

And we pray:

I thank you Lord

For knowing me better than I know myself

And for letting me know myself

Better than others know me.

Help me do good, I pray, Amen.

Let us conclude our prayers with the words of the prophet Micah:

May we act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with our God.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen

High School:

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Amen

Jesus calls ordinary, confused, broken and odd, people.  Jesus asks Matthew to be a disciple.

Matthew was a tax collector which made him very unpopular with the people of Galilee. Being a tax collector meant that at that time he was working for the enemy, the Romans. Nevertheless, Jesus called him to follow him.   Jesus said to Matthew, "Follow Me."  And Matthew got up and followed him and it changed Mathew forever. Scary but amazing!

The lesson for you and me in this story?

Simply: no matter who we are and what people think of us, we are called to follow Jesus. Sometimes we don't think that we are good enough to be a friend of Jesus. Jesus thinks otherwise. God's gift to us is that we are all good enough to be part of the mission of Jesus to spread goodness and light into our world.

Amen
