In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Today is Ash Wednesday.  This day is the beginning of our Lenten journey as we prepare for the great feast of Easter.

Lent is a time of prayer where we take extra time to speak with God. It is a time of fasting from things that make us selfish and distract us from paying attention to Jesus and loving others. It is a time of moderation where back away from excesses in our lives to remember the poor and broken doing simple things like abstaining from meat at certain times.

In Lent we make ready to heal our relationships with God, others, and ourselves – through changing how we live – through opening our hearts to love more deeply.

As Christians we are called to kindness:

Mother Teresa wrote:

Loving God,

Spread love everywhere you go:
first of all in your own house.
Give love to your parents,
to your brother or sister,
to a next-door neighbour....

Let no one come to you without
leaving better or happier.

Be the living expression
of God's kindness;
kindness in your face,
kindness in your eyes,
kindness in your smile
and kindness in your warm greeting.

In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
