Thank you to all for a very successful and memorable outdoor education winter experience! The letter below will be updated when a new date is set, but will remain up for now as an example of what to expect if your child is of age to do this in the 2020-2021 school year.
October 18th, 2019
Our Grade 8 students will be participating in a 'Winter Residential Experience'. The dates for the trip are currently set for February 4-6, 2020. The selected destination site is the Mother Teresa Centre located at Kenosee Lake in the Moose Mountain Provincial Park, which is about 2 hours east of Regina.
The Mother Teresa Centre provides a unique environment for students to participate in the 'Winter Residential Experience'. The site is fully winterized and sleeps 36 in 12 rooms (each room has a double bed and a single bed). There is also a large common area with couches, kitchen and dining area, bathrooms/showers, in-floor heating and a wood burning stove (facility information can be accessed at https://campkenosee.weebly.com/facilities.html). The facility has been used extensively by schools and various community organizations for many years. Students will depart by bus from Deshaye Catholic School @ 8:00 AM on Tuesday, February 4th and return to Deshaye Catholic School @ 2:30 PM on Thursday, February 6th. There will be a minimum of three staff members involved with the facilitation and supervision of this excursion. The total cost per student is being budgeted at approximately $100.00/student. Our intention is to offset the cost for this 'experience' through school fundraising. However, we are asking that each student contribute an additional $45.00 dollars to help offset the cost of food and accommodations. We have dedicated a portion of class time to ensure that each student will be adequately prepared to successfully participate in the outdoor winter environment. This includes proper dress, nutrition, and activity content knowledge. Proper supervision will be provided for all circumstances. In the event of an emergency, our closest access to medical facilities would be the town of Carlyle. We will have a First-Aid kit available at all times and students are required to bring any medication they would normally take plus any special circumstance allergy or asthma meds. Our staff members are also certified in First Aid/CPR.
We strongly believe that this 'Winter Residential Experience' will provide each student with a unique and powerful educational opportunity. Please complete the attached Permission and Health Information Form and return it, along with $45.00 (non-refundable) by December 13th, 2019. School Cash Online is available for parents to pay online. There is also an informational parent meeting being held at the school on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019 at 7:30 PM in our Resource Centre. The meeting is being held on the same night as the Happy Camper Literacy Night in the Deshaye gym. The literacy event runs from 6:30 – 7:30. We hope this is helpful in planning your attendance on the chance you need to attend both.
