The start of the 2017-18 school year will mark our first full year in the new the school. We had the opportunity to settle into the new building last spring. We are looking forward to a smooth start and great year full of academic and personal successes. We had a great year last year and want to continue that trend. There were a few things that contributed to the success we had last year. We had an overall attendance rate of 90%. Our families continued to support our reading nights and reading programs in the classroom. These are things we will continue to work on this year. Please help us by ensuring your children are at school whenever possible. Our office team will be calling if your child is absent. You can help them out by calling ahead and letting us know of an absence or illness. You can also text your child's absence to (306)550-7585. Your child's safety and education is important to us. The other area where we need your help is reading and math. We hope that you will continue to come out and support our reading nights. In addition to Reading Nights, please read with or encourage your children to read for pleasure at home. In the next week or so you will start to see library books come home, encourage them to read. Reading is a wonderful way to explore the world and one of the best gift God has given to us. Thank you for your support.
Our first reading night and meet the teacher night is on Tuesday, September 20th. This will be a great opportunity to meet your child or children's teachers'. The RCMP Cadets are back for another year of reading nights. They will be there to read with your children. Reading is a wonderful gift to share and the cadets are here to share their gifts and talents with our students. We hope to see everyone out that night.
This year will mark several changes at Sacred Heart. We welcome two new community partnerships to school. Over the summer, the "Early Years Family Centre" moved in and have been open since July 4th. They offer opportunities for young families to participate in programs and play in a safe environment. If you have little ones from birth to 6 years of age please stop in and see what they are all about. A monthly calendar of events is available on our Sacred Heart website. The other organization that opened on Sept. 5th is the "Prairie Lily Daycare." If you are looking for subsidized daycare in the area, please stop in and visit with them. They have several lots of spots left. We hope that our families will take advantage of both these wonderful new partnerships with Sacred Heart. If you are using their facilities, please use the designated doors located on Argyle Street.
This year we will also be exploring a new reading program. For many years, we have used AR as our reading incentive program. AR was great, but costs have forced the school division to drop the use of the program. All schools in Regina Catholic will be looking at new ways to celebrate and explore the love of reading. As a reading school, we will continue to love reading and encourage students to read. Reading nights will still look the same. Families will be encouraged to come out and read. We will have our RCMP cadets here again to read with our students. We will continue to have snacks, prizes and giveaways for students and families. This year we will also be starting monthly family fitness nights. These will start in October. Stay tuned for more information.
Another change this year will be outcome based report cards and reporting periods. All report cards will highlight and focus on curriculum outcomes, which will be evaluated on a scale. This year we will also provide two evenings throughout the year, one in November and one in March, for parents to come in to discuss their child's progress. We look forward to working with you and your child to ensure they are successful and that we are meeting their needs. I would encourage you to contact the office if you have concerns or questions. We are looking forward to a great year. Thank you for your support and commitment to your child's education.
God Bless and have a wonderful school year.
