We are very pleased to announce our new school team name and mascot.
As of January 8, 2018, we will be officially known as the
ÉCOLE ST. ANGELA MERICI GRIFFONS.
This version of the spelling of Griffons is the same
in both French and English.
Congratulations to Nolan and Ainsley S. as it was their submission of the Griffons that was selected by the student body.
A spirit wear clothing order table will be available at the Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30. We are very excited about the new spirit wear and some of the new options for purchase. Come on out and get some wonderful Christmas presents for your family members.
The Griffon (spelled the same in French) is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion and the head, wings and front talons of an eagle. This mascot pays tribute to St. Angela Merici’s history as the “St. Angela Merici Eagles”, while also introducing a new element to the school’s identity.
The Griffon is said to be a strong but gentle creature, known for its wisdom, courage, and leadership. Its role is often to act as a watchful and loyal guardian or protector.
In Christianity, the Griffon has come to symbolize the two natures of Jesus Christ. The lion half (lion = lord of the earth) represents Christ’s human nature as the Son of Man. The eagle half (eagle = lord of the sky) represents Christ’s divine nature as the son of God. Together, they remind us that Christ is King of both Heaven and Earth.
The Fleur-de-lis depicted on the Griffon’s chest symbolizes the French Culture of Canada. Furthermore, the three petals of the fleur-de-lis are often associated with the Holy Trinity.
