Hello Parents/Guardians of students currently in grade 6 and 7 band

In planning for the coming school year, we need to know which students will be continuing in band next year.  Though we do not know exactly what the band program will look like next year at this point (we will be following all safety guidelines), it will continue to focus on students learning music through playing a band instrument.

Please fill out the following Jotform form to indicate whether or not your child will be continuing in band in the 2020-2021 school year.  We would like to hear from everyone- whether or not your child will continue.

Please contact me at j.drotar@rcsd.ca if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Dear Parent/Guardian of Grade 5 Student,

The Regina Catholic School Band Program is an opportunity for your child to learn to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument and to read music. Our school division's instrumental music program is one of the largest in the province.  Learning to play a wind or percussion instrument through the band program can be one of the most enjoyable experiences your child will have in school. It is an excellent way of developing reading skills, listening and memory skills, concentration, discipline, creative decision-making, social skills, self-confidence, group responsibility and leadership, numerous life skills, as well as an appreciation and knowledge of music by playing it!

With the current uncertainty for what school will look like in the fall, we don't know exactly what format the band program will take at this point.  However, no matter what it will look like, the program will still teach students to read music and play a band instrument.

Normally, students would have a chance to hear one of our school bands perform, hear a presentation from the Band teacher outlining all of the instruments, and have an opportunity to try the instruments.  Unfortunately we have not been able to do that this year.  However, to give students an idea of some of the instruments that they have the opportunity to play, the following website may be useful:

Go to: https://www.bepartofthemusic.org/bpotb/index.html

Scroll down to the Videos section

Select and view the Main Video (the first one on the list) – 14 minutes

Select and view the Parent Video (the third one on the list) – 5 minutes

There are additional videos that outline all the instruments which students are encouraged to watch.

The band program requires different students to play a variety of instruments. Once students submit their choices of instruments, students will be assigned an instrument to create a band with a balance of different instruments. All instruments are fun to play. For the band program, Parents/guardians are responsible for supplying an instrument for their child to play. Local music dealers offer a variety of rental or rent-to-purchase plans. More information will be included in our next communication. Rental of an instrument begins around $130 or so for the year. Larger or very high cost instruments such as the tuba, baritone, French horn, or bass clarinet can be provided by the school for a fee to cover maintenance of the instrument.

There is a Band Parents Association that helps with the band program in partnership with the school division.  Historically, there has been a Band Parents fee of $140.00 per student OR $225.00 per family for families with more than one student.  At this point, we are not sure what will happen with this for next year and will let you know when we know.  This is just information so that you know what has happened in the past.

I hope that you and your child will discuss opportunities in the Band program and that you be a part of this exciting and rewarding experience in the 2020-2021 school year.

Because we don't currently have in school classes, we are asking ALL grade 5 families to fill out the following Jotform as an expression of interest, or to decline interest, for participation in the Regina Catholic Schools Band program:
