Handwritten meeting notes from February 1899 from the Graton School District

Two Ts or Not Two Ts

That is the question…. at least when it comes to one of our gathering spaces.

In the process of moving from our former Catholic Education Centre location on Cameron Street, we uncovered a fun little mystery in some very old files. This turned into a 125-year-old investigation for one of our most detail-oriented colleagues, Executive Assistant Caroline Sackville.

Based on the original name of RCSD, our largest meeting room is known as the Gratton Room.

Typed out minutes from 1978 approving name change from Graton to RRCSD No 81

However, we learned the correct spelling of Graton (with one "t") was mistakenly changed somewhere along the way to Gratton. After digging into the original board minutes (from 1899), historical Ministry documents from when we were known as the Graton School District, and even Father Damien Graton’s headstone (whom the division was named after), it's clear that the name was originally spelled with just one "t."

With support from our Board of Trustees, we are reverting to the correct, original spelling moving forward. All calendars, documents, and materials will be updated accordingly.
